Gent 1 Angel Square

The Gent by Honeywell Vigilon Voice Enhanced fire alarm and detection (FDA) system has been selected to protect the Co-operative Group’s new state-of-the-art headquarters, No’1 Angel Square, Manchester.

The Newly constructed fifteen storey property is a unique building and a striking new landmark on the City of Manchester’s skyline, and is the first phase of a planned £800 million project that is to regenerate the company’s existing 20 acre site, and promoting new business ventures such as residential, retail and leisure facilities in to the area.

Three thousand employees from the Co-operative Group working across the Group’s family of retailing and financial services businesses began moving into No’1 Angel Square in early 2013 and Gent’s fully networked Vigilon fire alarm system, which was installed in the building prior to its opening, now provides coverage and fire protection for the entire 325,000 square feet of open plan office and support space.

The Gent solution comprises of eight individual Vigilon panels, networked together all connected to over 2500 devices, using the company’s latest multi sensor S-Quad detectors, and also incorporates several Air Sampling Detection (ASD) Systems for very early smoke detection to protect the property’s server and data rooms. In addition to this a Thermal Imaging Smoke detection camera system is installed within the large atrium, which runs the complete height of the central core, from the ground to the top floor, which is large enough to accommodate a Boeing 737 jet.

The original specification was for a loop driven annunciation system and the Gent product was selected due to its advanced capabilities, as it can fit up to 200 devices on a single loop.

Martin Keenan, Business Manager North West, for Gent by Honeywell, said: “The integrated fire detection and voice alarm system combines the powerful Vigilon system Analogue Addressable fire detection with the latest voice evacuation technology. The system has been installed throughout using the Gent S-Quad range of detection, to ensure the management of the fire alarm system meets the highest technical sensing methods and standards.”

At construction stage Rotary North West Ltd, were the chosen M&E contractor selected by BAM, the main contractor and tasked with delivering the projects M&E building services solutions for the new Coop Head Office Building. They in turn employed a Gent 24 Technology Centre Specialist, which was Scotshield, who are recognised experts in the installation/commissioning and maintenance of Fire and Security Systems and integrated solutions for major projects throughout the UK.

Scotshield became involved in the project in its latter commissioning stages and installed and commissioned the latest WINMAG graphical display software tool from Gent and attached the system to the network. Scotshield has also subsequently been awarded a 12 month contract to carry out maintenance of the FDA system for the whole Angel Square site.

John Jones, Regional Director, for Scotshield England, said: “The Gent WINMAG PC based system that we installed allows the user to view real-time technical drawings of each floor of the building and allows ease of access and simple use of the system which enables the customer to manage events relating to the entire fire alarm system at the touch of a button or click of a mouse. The technology is currently among the best on the market today. It took just a total of six weeks from inception, to design, install, and commissioning and was up and running in good time for the completion of the building construction phase. No’1 Angel Square is a fantastically unique building that has completely transformed the area and we’re proud that a Gent technical solution and approved Integrator such as Scotshield were selected for such a prestigious project.”

The Co-operative building has seen the company recognised for its dedication and environmental commitment to tackling climate change. The construction of No’1 Angel Square saw the creation of one of the most sustainable energy commercial buildings in Europe and one of the first in the UK to be built to the BREEAM ‘outstanding’ designation.
