Leading provider of wall, roof and landscaping innovations, Wienerberger, has – for the second year running – provided practical support to the World Skills UK competition, which was held at The Skills Show last week, by providing over 40,000 bricks and an expert judge.

  • Hosted at the NEC in Birmingham from the 14th to the 16th November, Wienerberger’s very own Simon Dixon attended the World Skills UK competition as an expert judge in the regional and national Roofing: Slating and Tiling competition categories
  • Simon, Training Manager at Sandtoft, Wienerberger’s roof brand, was on hand to decide whether competitors fulfilled their specific project requirements
  • This included – but was not restricted to – following detailed instructions and drawings, producing neat and accurate work outputs, and working competently and safely
  • After a lengthy consideration, Simon, who had been allowed by Wienerberger to take seven days out of work to judge the competition, awarded Connor Martin of Cornwall College with the Gold medal
  • Wienerberger provided its bricks to the World Skills UK competition as a token gesture to help reinforce the decade long relationship between the company and the competition
  • The bricks were also used for the eco home demonstration, which was built during the nation’s largest skills and careers event and played host to the competitions, to showcase the process of live construction

Simon Dixon, who has over 30 years’ roofing experience, said:

On a personal level it was a real honour for me to be a regional and national judge at the finals. It’s also great for us to be a part of events such as these, so that we can guide and nurture these talented young people, who represent the future of the construction industry.
