Danfoss - Skiing World Championship in Schladming: Energy-Efficient Media Centre

Inverter Drives - Domestic Heating - Heating Systems - Heat Pumps

Danfoss Ski Centre

A new media centre has been built in Schladming for the FIS Alpine Skiing World Championship events in February 2013. The building is equipped with advanced building services, including a ventilation system with variable-speed fans driven by a total of six Danfoss frequency converters. This makes the system especially demand-driven and energy-efficient in operation.

The highly ambitious energy concept includes a photovoltaic system, river-water cooling from the nearby Enns River, biomass-fuelled district heating, the planned use of grey water for toilet flushing and other measures. CO2 neutral operation is achieved by combining this ambitious energy concept with native renewable building materials (wood). A partnership was forged with EnergieSteiermark for innovations in the use of renewable energy. A photovoltaic system with a capacity of 20 kWpeak has been installed on the roof of the Schladming convention centre. It generated 21,700 kWh/year in 2012, corresponding to a 9.4-tonne reduction in CO2 emissions.

The existing pump line of the snow machine will be used for a river-water cooling system that will be used for air-conditioning the rooms. This dual use yields both environmental and economic benefits. To further enhance the environmental concept, the heating system is connected to the district heating network of BioenergieSchladming. This energy is generated exclusively from renewable raw materials from the region.

Equipped with advanced media technology, the facility offers national and international media ideal conditions for optimal reporting on the Alpine Skiing World Championship.
