Trend Fuels Energy Savings at the New RasGas Headquarters

Energy Management Systems - BEMS Systems - Building Energy Management

RasGas is one of the most successful global energy suppliers and its new headquarters in Doha is an exemplar of sustainable construction. As the first building in Qatar to achieve LEED certification, it uses a Building Energy Management System (BEMS) from Trend Control Systems to help monitor and maintain air quality and save energy.

As one of the world’s leading suppliers of liquefied natural gas (LNG), Qatar based RasGas has an enviable reputation for being a safe and reliable provider of a product that has transformed a regional resource into a key component of the global energy mix. The company’s swift growth and development are significant factors behind Qatar's strong economic development and global positioning, and RasGas supplies LNG from Qatar to countries across Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Its portfolio of interests is extensive and RasGas oversees all the operations associated with seven LNG trains, two sales gas production facilities, helium production facilities, major shipping contracts and commercial partnerships. RasGas also manages the construction of the Barzan Gas Project, which will support the country’s rising domestic gas demand in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 programme – a scheme that aims to create a sustainable economy and advance the standard of living of its people.

In late 2011 RasGas moved into its new state-of-the art headquarters in Doha. An innovative building due to its eye-catching hexagonal footprint and distinctive palm shaped exterior, the 57-storey structure accommodates over 1,200 personnel. It was designed to reflect the company’s commitment to protecting the environment and in 2012 it was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for commercial interiors – Qatar’s first building to achieve this accolade.

Brett Doherty, chief safety, health, environment and quality officer at RasGas, explains, ‘This third-party internationally recognised certification programme covers design, construction and operation to ensure that high performance green buildings are sustainable and provide a healthy working environment for their occupants. To make sure that we are able to continue to do this and use energy efficiently, we asked Orientals Al Malki to come up with a solution that could maintain air quality and save energy.’

With branches all over the Middle East, Orientals Al Malki is an expert in the design, specification and installation of building services. Its assistant manager, Saman Gunasena, comments, “Since 1998 we have built a team comprising highly qualified technical staff and our success is the result of our dedication to excellent service and support. Having worked with Trend for many years by installing its Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) all over the region, we were confident that it would meet the RasGas’ requirements.”

The design concept for the RasGas headquarters was conceived following exhaustive collaboration and consultation with its employees. The layout of a typical floor includes a fully equipped multi-functional meeting room, a waiting lounge area, central storage, self-service pantry and high tech mail and reprographic facilities combined with both closed and open office planning. By focusing on excellence in the workplace the company is creating a positive environment for its employees to thrive and achieve the highest performance in their work.

The team from Orientals Al Malki was contracted for the supply, testing and commissioning of the BEMS, which was carried out after the initial construction, and is configured using IQ3 series Trend controllers in each floor for temperature control and air quality monitoring, and TONN for third-party system interfacing. VAV controls in-built with heaters in each office will ensure the comfort level of the office environment. Energy metering of the building is covered by four electrical meters on each floor, with over 250 electrical meters plus 10 thermal meters in selected locations and a water meter in the basement. These contributed to the LEED certification process as part of the indoor environment quality assessment by helping to maintain air quality control, comfort conditions and energy metering.

The BEMS is connected over the RasGas IT network infrastructure and is monitored from a central location via a Trend 963 Supervisor – a graphical, real-time user interface. It acts as a means of interaction with the BEMS, and security settings ensure that each user is only presented with information and functions that are relevant to their authority or task.

Orientals Al Malki is now in the process of installing and commissioning Trend Energy Manager software to complement its 963 Supervisor. Gunasena says, “This will enable designated administrators at RasGas to keep a close eye on the electricity, thermal energy and water consumed by the building services and the overall effect this has on its carbon footprint. It will also provide reports that contain observations, advice, proposals and performance graphs that will help optimise energy consumption throughout the building.”

RasGas is delighted with the Trend BEMS, as not only is it saving energy and money, it is also helping to meet the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) objectives – strengthening the company's connection with Qatari society and leading the way in sustainable building operation.
