Low Energy Fan Terminals for Data Centres and Comfort Cooling

Repositioning a Fantile

AET continues to develop their unique Fantile technology to meet current market requirements for energy efficiency products. The Fantile is a fan terminal unit that sits at the heart of the AET Flexible Space Underfloor Air Conditioning system. The plug and play unit is recessed into the floor plenum in place of a standard 600mm raised floor panel and supplies conditioned air into the work space.

Data Centres demand high levels of cooling in general, and in spot cooling in particular. The latest Fantile which fits into a standard 600mm floor void can provide up to 1500m3/h of cool air from a single unit which can serve the general area to minimise “Hot Spots”, or with specially selected grilles, direct air to selected points to maximise cooling in a specific machine or area. The same unit can be used to provide comfort cooling utilising floor plenum supply in offices and work places running at low speed and noise level.

Historically units were built with AC fans but with new EC fan technology high performance can be achieved with a noticeable reduction in electrical power. Single units can achieve in the region of 400-500m3/h operating extremely quietly and granting users personal adjustment of Fan Speed and Temperature Set Point. The units can deliver from 50m3/h to 1500m3/h but in normal comfort applications 400-500m3/h is usually selected. The standard units require only 230mm floor void to operate effectively.

The drive to reduce energy consumption in air conditioning has led designers to consider the modularity that the AET Flexible Space System offers. This modularity in turn offers diversity in operation, and when compared with large central plant systems, energy savings have been recorded in the region of 20-30%. Floor based systems inherently use less fan power as they operate at low pressures, with virtually no ducts. They use minimum pipe work and provide high standards of indoor air quality.

When it becomes time to change space around to meet new requirements the Flexible Space System can be re-arranged within hours normally and individual fantiles can be relocated in minutes as demonstrated in our latest YouTube video. Users include Microsoft, Bloomberg, the BBC, Jaguar Landrover, Willis, amongst others, and the system is currently estimated to be installed in over 2.5 million m2 of workplace installations worldwide.
